The Knitted Textiles pathway has an international reputation for innovation in constructed textiles. Fiona Ross MA RCA, a leading knitwear designer with over 20 years experience of working in the industry, has created a unique programme of study that enables students to fully experience all aspect of hand and machine constructed textiles.

The Knitted Textiles pathway is process lead, and provides a unique training in research and development through experimentation with yarn and constructed stitch technique. After the first year introduction students who select this pathway undertake an intensive second year programme which includes a series of exciting creative and technical projects. Second year students are also encouraged to gain work experience and complete live projects in association with leading international design companies.

The second year includes:

  • Drawing and research skills development
  • Colour research
  • Hand knitting techniques
  • Yarn development
  • Machine knitting
  • Dubied technical workshops
  • CAD for Knitted Textiles (including Photoshop)
  • Stitch technicals including tufting
  • Live projects set by industry
  • Extensive open access to the Red Shed knitted textiles workshops
  • Photography
  • Fibre and Fabric Lectures and workshops
  • Design lectures focusing on the impact of traditional and digital techniques on the environment, society and culture
  • Guest lectures by leading designers
  • Business skills development including CV writing and work experience planning
  • A visit to the  international Trade Show Pitti Filati in Florence, Italy.

Knitted Textiles processes explore techniques and make use of specialist machinery with a particular emphasis on craft techniques. At the beginning of the third year students are required to choose an individual programme reflecting  their interest in either fashion or interior constructed/stitched applications, commercially or gallery focussed designing.
