The Printed Textiles pathway has developed an international reputation for contemporary design. Paul Murphy, a leading designer with over 30 years experience of working in the industry, has designed a specialist programme of study that enables students to fully experience all aspect of traditional and digital fabric designing and printing.


All students in the first year experience an exciting printed textiles project which explores the relationship between drawing and painting, fabric dyeing and printing for fashion or interior outcomes.

 

Once a student has elected to study in this Pathway, the second year is geared towards students become highly skilled in their chosen specialist area through a series of exciting creative and technical projects. Second year students are also encouraged to gain work experience and complete live projects in association with leading international design companies.


The second year includes:


  • Drawing and painting skills training
  • Colour research 
  • Fabric dyeing 
  • Fabric printing  
  • CAD for Printed Textiles (including Photoshop)
  • Digital Heat Transfer designing and printing
  • Live projects set by industry
  • Extensive open access to the Red Shed dye lab 
  • Open access to the printing workshop and tables (33m)
  • Photography
  • Fibre and Fabric Lectures and workshops
  • Design lectures focusing on the impact of traditional and digital techniques on the environment, society and culture
  • Design research techniques 
  • Guest lectures by leading designers
  • Business skills development including CV writing and work experience planning
  • A European cultural visit

The third and final year is about combining an extensive skills knowledge with individual ideas for fashion fabric design, interior textiles, product or accessories.
